Ex-F1 driver David Coulthard is urging followers and critics to maintain an open thoughts when judging Lewis Hamilton’s upcoming journey with Ferrari, extensively seen as the ultimate chapter of his storied Formulation 1 profession.

At 39, with 356 grands prix underneath his belt and a record-tying seven world championships, Hamilton’s pursuit of an elusive eighth title—a file that might eclipse the mark he shares with Michael Schumacher—has taken him to Maranello.

The transfer, introduced in February 2024, despatched shockwaves by means of the paddock, igniting debates about his motivations, his legacy, and his twilight years within the sport.

Talking just lately on the RacingNews365 podcast, Coulthard described Hamilton’s Ferrari endeavor as a “Hollywood script,” mixing pleasure with a considerate tackle the veteran’s latest struggles and the potential for a dramatic resurgence.

The Shadow of Fatigue at Mercedes

Coulthard doesn’t draw back from addressing the elephant within the room: Hamilton’s lackluster remaining seasons at Mercedes. After dominating the game for years, the Briton appeared to falter because the staff grappled with an uncompetitive automobile within the ground-effect period.

For Coulthard, this wasn’t nearly equipment – it was maybe additionally private.

“The worrying factor about Lewis within the final couple of years was that he simply didn’t appear to be as settled with the efficiency profile of the automobile,” he defined.

“[He might] have had racing driver fatigue. He’s been doing it for thus lengthy that he wanted a change, which generally you want in life and relationships to rediscover that mojo.”

It’s a compelling principle. Hamilton’s profession, spanning again to his debut with McLaren in Australia in 2007, has been a marathon of depth, with just one race missed in eighteen seasons – the 2020 Sakhir GP as a result of COVID-19.

Maybe the grind of practically twenty years, coupled with Mercedes’ struggles, dulled the spark that after made him untouchable.

Ferrari, with its unimaginable legacy and passionate tifosi, would possibly simply be the jolt he wants – a contemporary begin to reignite the hearth.

A Hollywood Script

For Coulthard, Hamilton’s transfer transcends the game itself.

“He actually appears to be and it’s a Hollywood script, Lewis going to Ferrari,” he mentioned.

“He appears to be like unimaginable, is defying his age by way of how match he’s and comes off the again of being probably the most profitable driver within the historical past of the game.”

It’s straightforward to see why Coulthard likens this to a blockbuster. Hamilton, the worldwide famous person with a aptitude for style and a penchant for defying expectations, becoming a member of Ferrari—probably the most iconic staff in F1 historical past—is the type of narrative that scriptwriters dream of.

Add within the stakes of that eighth title, and the plot thickens. This isn’t only a profession transfer; it’s a big gamble for immortality.

“There are such a lot of issues to be enthusiastic about,” added the Scot. But, he’s fast to mood that enthusiasm with pragmatism.

“However we simply can’t write that remaining chapter but, there might be a remaining chapter and it might be in two years, actually throughout the subsequent 5.” The clock is ticking, however the ending stays unwritten.

An Open Thoughts for an Unsure Legacy

Coulthard’s name for persistence is the place his evaluation really shines.

“There might be a remaining chapter after which we can make that judgment, so I’m going into it with an open thoughts,” he reasoned.

It’s a plea for perspective in an period of snap judgments and sizzling takes. Hamilton’s Ferrari stint might finish in triumph—an eighth title, a fairy-tale end—or it might falter, leaving his legacy open to scrutiny.

Both approach, Coulthard insists we wait and see.

“I’m going into it tremendous excited and with full information that it doesn’t matter what any of us assume, the potential and alternative lie in his fingers, within the fingers of one of many best drivers within the historical past of the game.”

This isn’t blind optimism—it’s religion in Hamilton’s confirmed greatness. Coulthard is aware of the burden of 103 wins, 104 pole positions, and a profession that’s redefined what’s doable in F1.

He’s seen drivers rise and fall, and he acknowledges that Hamilton’s story isn’t over till the checkered flag drops for the final time.

For now, the previous McLaren and Pink Bull driver invitations us to embrace the uncertainty, to marvel at Hamilton’s audacity, and to carry off on judgment till the ultimate credit roll.
