Mercedes technical chief James Allison has admitted it was a “clear mistake” to begin Lewis Hamilton on the comfortable tyres on the Singapore Grand Prix.
Hamilton was the one driver within the high 10 to go for softer rubber for the beginning of Sunday’s race on the Marina Bay Avenue Circuit.
The seven-time world champion was unable to achieve a spot initially regardless of difficult Max Verstappen into Flip 1.
From that time, Hamilton’s tempo in the end was poor, coming into the pit lane on Lap 17.
This proved to be too early as he was overcut by teammate George Russell – and in the end crushed by Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc.
Hamilton has already voiced his criticism of the technique in a Petronas sponsor occasion following the Singapore GP.
Talking in a video on Mercedes’ YouTube channel, Allison defined their rationale for selecting the softs.
“Earlier than I give the reason, I’ll simply begin off by saying: we shouldn’t have began on the softs, that was a mistake,” he stated. “If we might flip again time we might do what these round us did and choose the mediums.
“The reasoning was that the comfortable tyre fairly often lets you get away from the beginning abruptly and permits you an excellent likelihood of leaping a spot or two within the opening laps of the race. We had no actual expectation earlier than the race that we have been going to undergo the kind of difficulties that we then skilled on the comfortable rubber.
“We imagined we might get the upside of the comfortable rubber, of getting a spot or two. We didn’t as a result of that’s the manner the begins performed out.
“We hoped that the draw back of the comfortable being a bit extra fragile wouldn’t play out notably badly as a result of on the entire if you happen to look again through the years in Singapore, on the entire, the tempo begins very, very simple at Singapore and the drivers then construct up the tempo over many, many laps leaving a comfortable tyre completely OK to run comparatively deep into the pit window.
“We didn’t get the place initially, the tempo begin build up from round Lap 5 and that left Lewis with a automobile that wasn’t notably completely happy anyway affected by fairly poor degradation and needing to come back in early as a consequence. It actually ruined his race for him. A transparent mistake.”
